May 2011 - We are sad to say that Marigold passed away recently. Marigold was an old lady, full of character who will be greatly missed by everyone. She was so thin on her arrival that she was not expected to make it through that first winter but with some extra care Marigold spent more than 3 happy years with us. She changed from a little madam into a sweet girl, always looking for some attention and remembered fondly by all who met her.

Marigold - Donkeyrescue Crete Greece
Since February 2008 Marigold lives in the Haven, Malia Crete. She was found in Neapoli, a few miles from Malia. She was just walking there without anyone taking notice of her. The city of Neapoli called the refuge with the question if they would take her. Marigold entered the shelter, very skinny with fat bumps on her back and butt (from the time that she was overfed). Marigold was very spoiled; she bit and kicked you and also the other animals in her environment, if she did not get enough attention. Now one year later, she is doing better, she has found her place and looks to be satisfied with anything, and she does not bite anymore and comes for cuddles and enjoys the attention.
The only thing is that since last winter Marigold has lost more and more weight, despite the fact that she is eating normally. We thought her to have hyperlipaemie, so we did a blood test but because she eats well it is not likely that she has this. Too much and too quick loosing weight with donkeys can cause this disease that can lead to the death. We are now researching what she has and have bought special very expensive donkey food in the Netherlands. We hope this will work.
For now she has no medications but needs this special food, with cereals, vitamins and minerals, her blood tests are send to the Donkey Sanctuary in England and we soon hope to hear more.
Of course we hope that Marigold, despite her old age (about 40 years) will be able to remain in our shelter for some time so people can enjoy her life or through the virtual adoption.

We verdachten haar van hyperlipaemie, dus hebben een bloedtest afgenomen, maar door haar eetlust verwachten we niet dat ze dit heeft. Teveel en snel vermageren kan deze ziekte bij ezels veroorzaken en kan de dood tot gevolg hebben. Zijn nu aan het onderzoeken wat ze wel heeft en hebben haar op speciaal ezelvoer gekocht in Nederland en hopen dat dat aanslaat!!!
Vooralsnog heeft ze geen medicijnen, maar alleen dit speciaal voer nodig, boordevol met allerlei granen, vitamines en mineralen, haar bloedonderzoeken zijn opgestuurd naar Donkey Santuary in Engeland en hopen spoedig meer te horen!
Natuurlijk hopen we dat Marigold ondanks haar al hoge leeftijd (+/- 40 jaar) nog even in onze midden kan blijven en mensen van haar kunnen genieten, in het eggie of via de virtuele adoptie.

Update on Marigold - March 2011
Unfortunately Marigold remains in pain and it is necessary to give her painkillers. She is very old and is very skinny, but she manages to cope with it all OK. We will receive new photos of her in April when Diana goes to visit her in Crete.

Update on Marigold, September 2010
Although Marigold's weight remains low, things are getting well. In wintertime she got extra food but did not gain any weight. In spring the farrier came and the dentist (from the outreach project). Her hooves were fine and the ulcer was gone. The dentist did pull a tooth which was loose. We hoped this would have been the cause of her not gaining weight, but unfortunately it was not the case. Probably it is just old age.
Her fur is shining, which is a measure of her health. When she is outside she comes straight to you when she sees you and she enjoyes the visitors in the shelters. She stands beside the people and waits patiently till they pet her and hug her. That makes her day. She is enjoying it and we are too because it gives so much pleasure to see her like that, to spend her old days like this, with friendly people who love her. What more could she want?

Update 22/9: Marigold her blood tests are fine. She is now kept apart when she eats till she finishes it all. She feels okay and her coat is shining. She eats very slowly. In October the Vet from England is coming to check upon her teeth.

The special food for Marigold has arrived on Crete. Now that she finally has a change to gain some weight, she started to limp. Luckily the Dutch farrier Has Signer was on the isle for our outreach project, so he could check her. She has a hoofulcer, it was opened, found and the pressure was taken off.
She started to walk better straight away. Ofcourse we were very happy and hoped that this was the cause of her loosing weight. But our happiness lasted a short time. A few days later we were back were we started. She has a lot of pain and we are in contact with Crete and the farrier who is back in Holland. Probably her sole is badly infected, unfortunately the painkillers are not available on the isle so that must come from the mainland. Also pullointment is not available here. We are now going to try antibiotics to see if we can help her.
The prospects are not good but we do not give up hope. We keep you informed.
Het speciale voer voor Marigold is aangekomen op Kreta. Dus ze kon eindelijk gaan aansterken, begint ze ineens mank te lopen. Gelukkig hadden we de Nederlandse hoefsmid Hans Signer voor ons outreach project op het eiland, dus even haar hoef checken, heeft ze een hoefzweer. Dus openmaken en gelukkig het werd gevonden en kon de druk eraf.
Ze begon bijna direct weer beter te lopen. Natuurlijk waren we heel erg blij en hoopten dat dit haar probleem was van de vermagering. Maar helaas onze blijdschap was maar van korte duur. Een aantal dagen later waren we weer terug bij af. Ze heeft heel veel last en hebben nu contact met Kreta en de hoefsmid die weer in NL is.
Waarschijnlijk is haar hele zool zo erg geinfecteerd, helaas is de bute (pijnstillers) op en niet op het eiland te krijgen, dus moeten van het vaste land komen. Trekzalf is ook niet te krijgen, om evt. de infectie eruit proberen te trekken. Dus gaan we antibiotica proberen of we haar daar mee kunnen helpen.
De vooruitzichten zien er niet goed uit.......maar geven de hoop nog niet op. Hoop binnenkort meer te berichten.
